Lee: science solves everyday problems

I think it's timely to show how Lee has used his knowledge of science and his practical skills to make our life easier. For those of you know the TV show, we can call them MacGyver skills.

When we first arrived, we bought expensive brand yogurt (without live cultures) in small plastic containers. Then we found out we could buy real yogurt at the Turkish restaurant and bakery. So Lee used that as a starter and began to make his own yogurt. During the cool weather, he set the jar next to our radiator for just the right amount of warmth. Now that we're not heating our apartment any more, he's found a new way to warm the culture--in the bed, with a hot water bottle:

Even though our furnished apartment has pots and pans and some appliances like a microwave, rice-cooker, and electric kettle, it doesn't have a toaster. And I'm a big toast fan! Lee figured out that we could make toast on the stove-top in a frying pan. Just turn the heat up high, and grill it. Later we found a place where we could buy a toaster, but we'd already gotten used to this method.

One final story. When I was preparing for the egg-dyeing activity, I wondered how to deal with the brand and date stamps on the eggs we'd bought. Lee thoughtfully used a bit of bleach and a scrubber sponge to take the ink off and prepare a pristine egg to take the colors.

Lee can also convert centigrade to fahrenheit in his head (very handy here), estimate where it will be sunny or shady at a given time,  and use heat/pressure to open stubborn jars.

Hooray for science! Hooray for Lee!  --Kitty
